SINCERE SYMPATHY

Is extended to the family of the late Vincent Kelly, Boytonrath, New Inn.

Vincent, age 75, sadly left us on the 22nd of February, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Vincent was born on the 30th of October 1947 to John and Kitty (née Downey) Kelly of New Inn. After Vincent graduated from Rockwell College in 1966, he moved to England, where he met his beloved wife, Teresa. They were married in 1973, then travelled the world together, visiting over fifty countries. Vincent and Teresa had eight children; Leon, Tia, Chelan, Ciaran, Caitlin, Oisín, Eithné, and Gwyneth Kelly. In 1990, after living abroad for many years, Vincent returned with his family to the country, farm and home of his childhood, which he so deeply loved. His care and respect for the land lead him and Teresa to organic farming and restoring the family cottage to its original form. Vincent continued to travel the world and have many adventures at home and afar, including in 2019, when he walked 700 kilometres of the famous Camino de Santiago. He was a man of faith, an artist, a fisherman, a world traveller, a farmer and an incredible storyteller. He had a great love for literature, poetry, music, nature, sports and his family. Above all, he was a wonderful father and pop-pops and was adored by all nine of his grandchildren; Indira, Elijah, Isaac, Cashel, Piper, Judah, Kora, Maya and Amalie. Those who had the fortune of knowing Vincent loved and admired him for his kind and gentle heart, and will be dearly missed. Vincent is survived by his cherished wife, Teresa; seven of his eight loving children; his nine grandchildren; and his sisters, Irene Kelly, Marita Marouf and nephew Fayçal Marouf.

SCOIL MHUIRE GAN SMÁL, NEW INN

On Wednesday February 22,  fifth and sixth class travelled to the Helix in Dublin for the FÍS national film awards. They were nominated in three categories for their short film on “Lena Rice” and came home with the “Best Script” award. The FÍS Film Awards 2023, hosted by RTE’s Sinead Kennedy, is a collaboration between the Institute of Art, Design and Technology and the Professional Development Service for Teachers. It was devised as a grassroots initiative to nurture Ireland’s future moviemaking talent by encouraging them to devise, develop, produce, and submit their short films for consideration in a range of categories. The event was co-produced by students of IADT’s National Film School. The concept behind FÍS is to help children develop essential communication and team working skills, along with technological skills to assist them in a digitally driven world. It also aids teachers in developing children’s problem-solving and investigative minds and is aligned with the Government’s digital strategy for schools. The FÍS Film Awards Ceremony is the highly successful outcome of the FÍS Film Project. The awards set out to celebrate and embrace the creativity, imagination, originality, special techniques such as animation and special effects that students learn during the process that enabled them to give outstanding performances both in front of and behind the camera. Well done to all involved. We may have some budding filmmakers among us!

New Inn Notes 11/02/2023

MANY YOUNG MEN OF TWENTY

Fr. Mathew players, New Inn have chosen the John B Keane classic,

Many Young Men of Twenty, for their 2023 Production, which will take place in the community Hall, New Inn, for five nights, from 22nd to the 26th of February inclusive.

The action occurs in the backroom of a public house, in the village of Keelty , over aperiod of a year, in the early 1960’s.

Many Young Men of Twenty is described as a musical play of emigration, and that is just what it is. It examines the effect of mass emigration on a community and the impact of those who have gone, on the lives of those left behind.

But of course, as in many plays by John B. even the darker side of life is not withoutits humour and glimmers of hope, and a cast of colourful characters, namely theinhabitants of Keelty village, aka The Fr. Mathew players transport the audience back in time, to meet the locals, albeit at a sad time, as many were leaving forEngland to try and make a better life for themselves, and their families at home. Some resigned to go, some hopeful, some happy and some just plain terrified, all human life and emotion is there, and is conveyed with song and story, humour and pathos, in appropriate amounts by the talented cast that are the Fr Mathew Players. As with any vibrant and committed group, the cast is made up of old stalwarts, and new faces, and it is in this, that the rich tapestry of youth and experience becomes evident, because as the climate of economic hardship bites again we can be glad to be in a position to present a play with such large numbers and feel gratified. that so many young men and women of twenty and upwards well upwards! enjoy the experience and return for more. Long may it continue.

We are delighted to Present Many young Men of Twenty, and on behalf of the cast, crew, and committee, we would like to thank you for your support in the past and look forward to seeing you in New-Inn, dates and details below

Play runs from Wednesday February to Sunday February 26 at 8pm- General tickets €15 with a concession evening on Wednesday Feb 22 with ticketspriced at €10. Booking is essential and tickets can be obtained from

PARISH LINKS

The Parish Links held their annual Christmas party on Sunday January 8 in the NICC. It was great to see so many friendly and neighbourly faces after a gap of three years due to covid. It was also poignant and a little sad as we remember the people who have passed away since our last party. The committee would like to thank Eileen Condon and her staff for the lovely meal; Mary O’Donnell, New Inn for supplying the excellent Christmas cake; Paddy O’Connor (Bellvue) for taking photographs of the occasion. Eddie Golden in the band brought much enjoyment to the day and together with our own Fr Bobby and Kate O’Dwyer provided great entertainment. Also, we had “Burgess school Irish dancers from New Inn: Sarah Flynn, Leah and Sophie Lonergan, Grace and Emily O’Dwyer who put on a lovely display. Congratulations to Stephen Boland, New Inn winner of the hamper (on display in The Shop, New Inn). A big thank you to Ml Purcell and committee members for selling the lines of the hamper which raised much needed funds for the Parish Links.  Thanks also to the local businesses, clubs and individuals who donated spot prizes on the day too numerous to mention.  Great credit is due to all involved, especially the hard-working committee who put a great effort in year after year and thanks also to the Hall committee. A great day was had by all, with parishioners meeting up with old friends and making new ones. Thanking everyone who attended the party and wishing everyone a Happy & Healthy New Year!
