ARM WRESTLING

The Pinkerton’s Irish Open Arm Wrestling Championship, held recently in Armagh, has officially been declared the largest arm wrestling event in Ireland, attracting over 90 entries from around the globe. The event featured professional and novice competitions across various weight categories. Five English brothers from Knockgraffon participated in the professional competitions.

Cormac, the  eldest, competed in the 105 kg category for both left and right arm, securing fifth place in both. Fergus and Diarmuid took part in the 95 kg category, which proved to be a challenging group as they faced off against former world champions. Finbarr, competing in the 86 kg category, came in fifth for the right arm. Cillian, the second eldest, competed in the 75 kg category and emerged as the new Irish open champion. He won the right arm competition and came second in the left arm competition. This is a remarkable achievement, and we are immensely proud of him and all the boys.

For more details about the event, including results and photos, you can visit the Northern Ireland Arm Wrestling Facebook page. The boys took up arm wrestling during the COVID-19 lockdown, and the sport continues to gain popularity in Ireland.

New Inn Notes 20/01/2024

EILEEN O’CONNOR

We lost our oldest parishioner during the week. Eileen O’Connor (nee Wall). Eileen lived in the heart of the village beside her good friend, Philly Fahey. Eileen was in her 100th year and would have celebrated her hundred birthday in April. She was married to the late Christy O’Connor of Boytonrath, New Inn and when Christy passed away some years ago, Eily moved to the village. She is survived by her three daughters and predeceased by her sons Brendan and John who passed away just before Christmas.

Our deepest condolences go out to her daughters Eileen, Deirdre and Marie, her extended family, and all those who knew and loved Eileen. Her spirit and vivacity were a beacon of light in our parish, and her absence will be deeply felt. Eileen was a great character in the village, and she always had a word for everyone.

Her love for card games was well-known, and she was a regular at the Knockgraffon cards every Wednesday evening (right up until Covid), where she was both a fierce competitor and a gracious player.

Eileen was a woman of immense strength and resilience. Her determination to live independently was a testament to her indomitable spirit.

In her 100 years, Eileen touched countless lives and left an indelible mark on our community. Her laughter, her stories, and her kindness will be remembered by all of us who had the privilege of knowing her.

We pray for Eileen and also pray for her family and friends, that they may find comfort and peace in their memories of Eileen.

Rest in peace, dear Eileen. You will always be remembered in our hearts and prayers.
