Pictured here for the Willie Flynn Memorial Golf Classic are Rockwell Rovers Gaa club officials John Hally (senior chairperson) holding the Irish Press Cup, Jimmy Looby (president) holding the John Doyle Cup and Tommy Buckley (juvenile chairperson) at Cahir Park Golf club recently.

Pictured here for the Willie Flynn Memorial Golf Classic is  John Hally (senior chairperson) and Mary Flynn (wife of the late Willie Flynn)  at Cahir Park Golf club recently.

Willie was a stalwart of Rockwell Rovers Gaa club, a great clubman and accountant for the club for many years. Willie always gave freely of his time to the Club and his children continue the family tradition, with Martina, Alma, Tommy and Willie jnr all involved with the club either as players, coaches or in admin positions. His pride in his children and grandchildren playing for the club was all important to Willie who rarely missed any match along with his wife, Mary.

A little bit of history : following a proposal from Tipperary, the Munster Council approved the commissioning of the new John Doyle Cup, which was presented for the first time to the 2024 Munster Minor Hurling Champions i.e Tipperary.

John Doyle from Holycross-Ballycahill in County Tipperary was one of the legends of the game of hurling, winning 8 All-Ireland Senior Hurling titles and 10 Munster Senior Hurling Championship titles in an inter-county career spanning from 1949 to 1967.

FR BOBBY FLETCHER: A BELOVED COACH AND MENTOR

In an interview in this month’s edition of the “Irish Runners” magazine, Sharlene Mawdley, European champion and an aspiring Olympian from Newport, Co. Tipperary, expresses her gratitude towards an influential figure in her athletic journey. She is asked “who were your early coaching influences?”

“Father Bobby Fletcher. He was our parish priest at the time, and he was running the athletics club with Anne Fagan. He is now the parish priest of New Inn but to this day I’m in contact with him. I remember when I started, he used to say to me “Shars this competition is going to be red hot” and I used to think that he meant the day was going to be so nice that it was going to be a really warm day. Of course, he meant the competition itself was going to be very hard. I used to go to the County “B”, and I remember I came joint third in an event, but they had to send me my medal in the post. I remember waiting by the post-box every day thinking, is it going to come? It all started from there, things moved on and when I was in my third year of school I moved and trained with Harley and Harrison for a few years then I moved onto Gary Ryan in my third year of college”.

Each coach contributed their unique expertise and support, further fuelling Mawdley’s growth as an athlete. Father Bobby Fletcher’s influence extended far beyond Mawdley’s formative years. His unwavering belief in her abilities and his commitment to nurturing young talent have left an indelible mark on her athletic journey. As Mawdley continues to chase her Olympic dreams, she remains grateful for the invaluable guidance and inspiration she receives from Fr Bobby.

Check out the June edition of the “Irish Runners” magazine to see the full interview.

Weekly meet-ups are starting in preparation for the 2024 Tidy Towns Competition. Join us at the grotto every Wednesday evening from 7pm to 8pm. If possible, please bring a high visibility vest and some gardening tools. There is a lot to do, and any help is greatly appreciated. If the meet-up time doesn’t work for you, feel free to work on your own time by picking up litter, weeding, or painting. We kindly request that all households keep the area outside their homes free of litter and weeds. Our Tidy Towns committee is small and under pressure to maintain the village’s appearance, especially with the upcoming judging starting from June 4th. Remember, every little bit helps. Last year, your efforts paid off, and we increased our marks by 6. Let’s aim to increase our marks even more this year! New members are always welcome to join us.
