FR BOBBY FLETCHER: A BELOVED COACH AND MENTOR

In an interview in this month’s edition of the “Irish Runners” magazine, Sharlene Mawdley, European champion and an aspiring Olympian from Newport, Co. Tipperary, expresses her gratitude towards an influential figure in her athletic journey. She is asked “who were your early coaching influences?”

“Father Bobby Fletcher. He was our parish priest at the time, and he was running the athletics club with Anne Fagan. He is now the parish priest of New Inn but to this day I’m in contact with him. I remember when I started, he used to say to me “Shars this competition is going to be red hot” and I used to think that he meant the day was going to be so nice that it was going to be a really warm day. Of course, he meant the competition itself was going to be very hard. I used to go to the County “B”, and I remember I came joint third in an event, but they had to send me my medal in the post. I remember waiting by the post-box every day thinking, is it going to come? It all started from there, things moved on and when I was in my third year of school I moved and trained with Harley and Harrison for a few years then I moved onto Gary Ryan in my third year of college”.

Each coach contributed their unique expertise and support, further fuelling Mawdley’s growth as an athlete. Father Bobby Fletcher’s influence extended far beyond Mawdley’s formative years. His unwavering belief in her abilities and his commitment to nurturing young talent have left an indelible mark on her athletic journey. As Mawdley continues to chase her Olympic dreams, she remains grateful for the invaluable guidance and inspiration she receives from Fr Bobby.

Check out the June edition of the “Irish Runners” magazine to see the full interview.

NEW INN CLASSIC VINTAGE CLUB

The sun shone brightly on Sunday, May 5th, as the New Inn Vintage Club held its annual Car & Tractor Run in honour of the late Walter (Watty) Cleary. The day kicked off with a delightful fun run for children, who rode their tractors and bikes through the village. It was a sight to behold, and it’s exciting to think that in ten years’ time, many of these youngsters will be driving their own cars and tractors in the run!

The event was a resounding success, raising an impressive €8000.00 for three important local organizations: New Inn Parish Links, Cashel Day Care Center, and Cashel Residential Older Persons Services (CROPS). The club is immensely grateful to all the dedicated volunteers who contributed their time and effort to make the day a triumph. From selling raffle tickets to providing food and acting as marshals to ensure everyone’s safety, their invaluable support was instrumental in the event’s success. The club extends its heartfelt thanks to everyone who generously made donations, as well as to the local schools and the GAA for allowing the use of their facilities.

The raffle prizes were truly fantastic, and the winners were thrilled. Orla Peters walked away with the first prize, followed by Ann Moloney in second place and Willie Flynn in third. Gearoid Moloney claimed the fourth prize, and a total of 25 prizes were awarded. As the evening descended, the festivities continued with an exciting auction at Barron’s Pub, accompanied by lively music. The club expresses its deepest gratitude to all those who generously donated items for the auction. The support and contributions from the community were truly heartwarming. A special thank you goes out to everyone who came out to witness the stunning display of vintage cars, tractors, and bikes. It is the unwavering support of people like you that makes this day so extraordinary.

The New Inn Vintage Club was established in May 2010 by Walter Cleary and Jimmy O Farrell. It is remarkable to see how the club has flourished over the years, and we eagerly anticipate many more successful runs in the future, raising funds for our beloved local communities. To date, the club has raised an impressive €50,000.00. This event showcases the power of community spirit and the joy that comes from preserving our rich heritage. The New Inn Vintage Club looks forward to continuing its important work and making a positive impact in the years to come.
